When I received an invitation for an afternoon of tea & conversations hosted by juana.com.ph, my happiness went through the roof. I had always wanted to experience such but I never had the opportunity to do so. Plus, I learned we would get to enjoy elegant tea at Writers Bar of Raffle Makati which was their event partner. I instantly sent my confirmation of attendance as it’s my pleasure and I feel honored to be invited there.
I already know about the presence of juana.com.ph. In fact, I visit their site from time to time as they feature inspiring Filipinas and also produce content that caters to the lifestyle of modern “Juanas” (or Filipino women). It was only at the event that I got to know about the site in more detail.
Juana.com.ph is headed by Ms. Juana Yupangco. The site is indeed her namesake but, as you can infer, it’s not about her life.
Ms. Yupangco mentioned that people were quick to pass judgment based on one’s stature in life and is certainly quite a struggle to women who have an all-ecompassing role. Juana.com.ph uplifts the modern Filipina by producing content that is relevant to the needs and wants of the woman of today. Thus, women of today no longer need to be alone in their journey as they choose to give their 100% in their chosen job or role.
Royal Afternoon Tea
After a brief talk about juana.com.ph and the event’s sponsors, I got to converse with esteemed entrepeneurs, writers, editors, and fellow bloggers while sipping on my chosen Paris tea and indulging myself with a medley of sweet and savoury creations inspired by queen Marie Antoinette.
The courses are served on a three-tier stand and the order of eating it is the following:
First, start with savoury treats such as a mini quiche and tea sandwiches.
The next one to be eaten is the scones with jam and cream. Eat the scones according to the custom of the nobles. Tear it open instead of slicing it. Afterwards, top it with jam and/or cream based on your preference.
Finally, end the course with sweets such as macarons, mini meringues, strawberry cream puff, and more.
The tea that I highly recommend for you to sip as you go through the wonderful courses is the Paris tea. It is a fruity black tea with vanilla and caramel notes and a hint of zest from the Bergamot orange.
Just in case you’re conscious about how to properly drink tea, you’ll want to know that every time you drink the sauce should go on one hand and the cup in the other. Do not raise your little finger as you grasp the tea cup’s handle. Lastly, do not grasp the bowl of the cup with your hand.
Anyway, this Royal Afternoon Tea Series by featuring Marie Antoinette can be enjoyed from 2 to 5P.M., at PHP 1, 500 (or USD 30) for two persons. An additional PHP 900 (or USD 1.8) for a sparkling glass of champagne can make the royal experience complete. Guests who will avail this until July 31 can enjoy the display of Wegwood’s Butterfly Bloom collection as well as a special discount for Wedgwood. Prices are also subject to 10% service charge and applicable goverment taxes.

During our afternoon tea at Writers Bar, each of us were asked with the question: “What is a modern Filipina?“
Our answer was recorded in a video to be featured on their site. I didn’t have enough time to gather and process my thoughts. So I ended up an incomplete response. In case my response couldn’t be understood well, I want to take this opportunity to redeem myself in advance.
Here is my complete answer:
A modern Filipina for me is someone who is a go-getter. She isn’t afraid to take risks in pursuing her passion but she has realistic plans in order to excel. Steadfastness, confidence, adaptability, and resilience are some of the qualities that help her accomplish tasks while juggling another long list of responsibilities. Finally, as she is an empowered woman, she may not be aware of it but she inspires other women as she goes through her imperfect journey.
How about you? What is a modern Filipina for you?
